Seek First

When there are more tasks at hand than hours in the day,

And the heft of your circumstances exceeds the girth of your paycheck;

When you are tempted to check out,

And it seems like running away might be a good idea;

If you are on the verge of shutting down,

And all hope seems lost;

Seek God first.

The Message puts it this way:

“Steep your life in God-reality, God-initiative, God-provisions. Don’t worry about missing out. You’ll find all your everyday human concerns will be met.”

And the New Century Version puts it this way:

“Seek first God’s kingdom and what God wants. Then all your other needs will be met as well.”

Does any of this speak Truth into your heart, my friend?  Because, it surely does mine.

Those times that I am in the throes of agony, mired in controversy, or trapped in indecision, I don’t always seek God first. In fact, sometimes?  He’s the last One I seek.

Can I tell you something?  That never works out that well for me.  And I am not using the word never, lightly. It may bring momentary stress relief or seeming clarity to a muddy situation – but after?

When Later comes, time shows me that I could have gained more peace and perspective had I simply sought out my Creator. First.

Truly? Who else could know me better?  Who else could know the situation better.

Who knows the beginning from the end?

Seek First the kingdom of God.

Oh, do!

Yes, indeedy.

One way that I seek first is by filling my heart with God’s peace and perspective one minute at a time. Proverbs 31 Ministries has been a part of my spiritual sustenance almost as long as I’ve called myself a Christian. One ministry that has been a constant and easy encouragement has been the one minute radio broadcast that Lysa TerKeurst and Renee Swope provide. These broadcasts air on radio stations across the country. I can not tell you how many times I’ve been struggling, turned on my radio, and caught this quick broadcast, only to have it be on exactly what I’m struggling with!  I can. not. tell you! 1. I love to use “The Message” as a parallel when reading some Scriptures and I, too, used it this week to look up Matthew 6:33!!

    When I think of “steep”, I can’t help but think of a steeping teabag, and love this image for our lives…when we soak our lives (the teabag) in His Truth (the hot water), we find His will and then peace will come, especially during those stressful times. Too often I’ve also tried to do things on my own, and you are so right…when we go to Him first, it’s SO much easier!! Thank you for sharing.

    • Pat, The Message sometimes really does illustrate a passage or verse in a way that I can “finally” get. I’m so thankful that we have so many different translations to use for furthering our understand of what in Heaven a particular Truth means! 😉

  2. Thank you for this. I have been trying to handle all of these trials on my own again. I am so weak. Praying I can continue to find myself on my knees. That is where the battle is fought. This was a blessing. I am in the thick of it, but hope is trying to peak through. Much love.

  3. I think there are times we all forget to seek Him first. I find I am doing better the more I am in these studies and the more I grow to love Him. Loved this blog and love your heart. Thanks for sharing with us. Debbie W.

    • Debbie, thank you so very much! It’s comforting to know that we are all on this path to greater Christ-likeness together. There truly is strength in numbers!

  4. I, too, admit that there are times that I seek God last instead of first. And you’re so right, it never, ever works out right when we do it on our own!! I also love how you related it to P31 and their radio messages. Thanks for sharing!

    • Kris, thanks so much! Hopefully, someday this side of Glory, I’ll begin to stop attempting to do it on my own every. single. time. 😉

    • Thank you for sharing that link. God has a way of sneaking themes into our lives when we least expect it, doesn’t He?

  5. You say it so well! I too am one of those- jump in and get it done- kind of people. Then when thing get worse and worse I find myself calling out to God for help. This OBS has really helped me begin to make an effort to stop- breathe- think- and pray. I find myself asking God’s guidance earlier in the process and then thinking more about the choices that I am making, with him in mind. Is this what he would have me to do? Is this God’s will?

    • Stop, breathe, think, and pray – love that Stella! Once again, our hearts seem to be on similar wavelengths! Those two questions at the end there? KEY for me, too!

  6. I love the Message version sometimes… it hits me in a new way when I read it… I have a Parallel Bible with the NIV/Message translations & sometimes, when I look at the Message way, I’m like “OHHH – that’s what that means” 🙂

    God reality… love that… in a world where reality shows are full of FAKE, what a reality that we NEED- HIS!

    • ‘Zactly, Rebecca Jo! Sometimes, I, too, just need to see the verse from a fresh perspective or in other language and I’m all, “NOW, I get it!” 🙂

    • Kim, on my knees right beside you. I’m praying that it will become less a last response and then move more toward a First Response before landing the Other Side of Glory, you know? 😉
